Alaska pollock,
a very tasty white fish, is not very well known
among the consumers. They are much more familiar
with the Atlantic cod, which used to be the
premier white fish in America till supplies
started to diminish. However, Alaska pollock
as a white fish is gradually gaining popularity
and gaining a place for itself in the market.
Cone shaped nets
of synthetic webbing which are towed through
the water by trawlers and vessels, is the method
of fishing for Alaska pollock. These trawlers
vary from 70ft to 380ft in length. These trawlers
move in the Bering sea and the Gulf of Alaska.
The larger boats
which are 150 feet have fish processing factories
and freezers hold on board and are therefore
known as catcher-processors or factory trawlers.
The small trawler which fish for Alaska Pollock
deliver them either to factory ships at sea
or to plants which are on the land for processing
and freezing.
A factory trawler
is fitted out with many sophisticated electronic
devices. There are banks of glowing electric
screens. Schools of fish detected by a forward
aimed sonar come up on the electronic screen.
Fish which pass under the ship are the ones
which will eventually be captured. The Alaska
Pollock also shows up on the scanner. A small
sonar is also sewn into the mouth of the net.
This sonar gives the captain information about
the shape of the net and therefore the captain
then decides to adjust the towing speed or depth
in order to maximize the catching ability. The
electronic screen also flashes scenes of fish
passing into the net from 800 feet below the
surface. These technologically advanced instruments
can also detect speeds, strengths and direction
of tides and currents.
All trawlers
have radars and plotters with computer memory.
These are programmed in such a manner, that
they can recall good Alaska pollock fishing
spots and locations of shipwrecks, rocks and
other obstacles which cover thousand of miles
of ocean floor.
Trawl nets are
big or small in relation to the horsepower of
the ship. A factory trawler which is 280ft in
length, will have a 6000 horsepower capacity
and will pull a net which will be large enough
to swallow the entire circus tent.
Hence we can
conclude that Alaska Pollock fishing is done
in a highly technical manner and the view to
focus on is optimization of the catch.
