Octopus belongs
to the Cephalopod family and can be found
both in the waters of the Atlantic and the Pacific
up and down the coasts of Mexico, the United
States and Canada as well as off the waters
of Thailand, Vietnam and India.
Most of the Octopuses
are not the giant creatures we imagine them
to be but are usually no more than one or two
feet in length weighing about three pounds.
A baby octopus is on an average two to five inches
in length. The skin of the baby octopus is a mottled
red, brown or purple. Fresh or frozen raw baby octopus
is purplish or brownish grey in color, but other
wise resembles the octopus that is found alive
in water.
A baby octopus
when born is as big as a flea. An octopus has
eight arms. They are nocturnal creatures. An
Octopus has a soft body and is an experts at camouflaging
themselves. They change color and blend into
their surroundings. If the octopus loses one
arm, it can re-grow it. An octopus has two eyes,
one on each side of its head. They have very
good eye sight but cannot hear. Octopus are
blue blooded creatures.
The mother octopus
goes into a dark cave and lays up to 1,00,000
eggs. Each egg has a string attached to it.
She ties all the eggs together and hangs up
the entire bunch from the ceiling. She keeps
guard over them day and night and does not go
out of her den. She starves herself and dies
probably even before the eggs are hatched.
Another defence
mechanism used by an octopus is its ability to shoot ink when
it is threatened. In this manner they confuse
the stalker. Although they have eight arms,
the octopus tires easily in a struggle. This
is because the oxygen carrying component in
their blood called hemocyanin is copper based.
It is therefore not very efficient in carrying
oxygen through their systems.
The octopus has
a very well developed brain. The baby octopus
learns by itself and also from one another.
The octopus has three hearts. Octopuses are carnivorous
creatures. They eat crabs, prawns, snails, and
clams. They bite the prey to kill it then take
it to the den for a leisurely meal. Although
octopuses have a hard row of teeth, they do
not chew their food. They inject a toxin into
the prey in order to paralyze it and soften
their flesh.
Baby Octopus
is sold whole or fresh, frozen or cooked. Most
of the baby octopus is sold already cleaned. Smoked and
canned baby octopus is also available. All parts
of the baby Octopus can be eaten expect for the eyes,
mouth area and the viscera. It can be eaten
raw, deep fried, stewed, boiled and pickled.
Baby octopus
grows fast. The Blue ringed baby octopus is
more developed than other octopuses. Baby octopus
meat is tender and resilient. The market for
baby octopus is highly developed and the demand
will keep growing steadily.
