U.S. fishery
products export have been steadily increasing
over the years and the same applies to the imports.
This is also very valid in the case of canned
salmon and whole and eviscerated salmon. Of
course this entire situation is dependent upon
Alaska's Salmon harvest. Although Japan has
been in the past the largest market for US fishery
products export, specially salmon, US salmon
exports to China continues to grow steadily.
It appears to be growing rapidly, far more than
any other major market. The US sales have made
an upward push because of increased US market
development. Therefore the China salmon industry
also continues to grow.
There are now
too many suppliers in the world salmon market
and this has resulted in weaker prices. Reports
tell us that seafood trade between the US and
China is growing. China exports China salmon
to the US. US fish and fishery exports to China
totaled US$ 193.2 million in 2003, up from 153
million 2002. Volumes rose from 118,500 to 137,100
tons in the same period. Salmon exports represented
9,200 tons and US$ 23.2 million in 2003, up
from 5700 tons and 18.6 millions in 2002. Also
in 2003, total US imports of fish and fishery
products from China reached an astonishing US$
910 million(263,000 tons) up almost 39% from
the same period in 2002(US $657 million and
196,000 tons).
The US seafood
export to China in 2004 were almost $263 million
up by 45% from 2003. China now holds a fifth
position in the US export market. The US exported
more of cod, salmon, other fishery products
and crab to China. This was the reason for the
overall increase of the US exports to China.
China's export of China salmon to the US also
increased.
This upward trend
of US seafood exports continued. In 2004 the
exports were valued at $390 million which meant
that it had gone up by 13% as compared to the
previous year. Salmon went up by $40.5 million
and canned salmon went up by 28.3 million. US,
China, Thailand, Norway are the major exporting
countries.
Global per capita
seafood consumption is projected to increase
from the current 16kg per person to 19-21 kg
in 2030. The trade of fish products between
the US and China would continue to expand. As
China salmon has a very good market potential
both in the US and in China, we can safely assume
that this fish will provide a major link in
the fish trade of both the countries.
