Freshwater Shrimp - Farming

This article explains the steps you need to understand about the Freshwater Shrimp known as Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Freshwater Shrimp is a large shrimp originally from Malaysia and introduced to the U.S.A. some years ago. Exhaustive research has ascertained that by following the latest strategies, Freshwater Shrimp can have a good growout and a good crop can be harvested each year. Freshwater Shrimp is a very important crop in aquaculture. The Freshwater Shrimp can now be cultivated from various juvenile stages to an adult level in temperate-climate outdoor ponds.

The Freshwater Shrimp life history is an an interesting life cycle of the prawn and the various biological stages of change from egg to adult that it goes through.

First, you have to introduce the prawn culture into the hatchery so that the Egg Hatching process occurs. There should be a nursery for proper juvenile growth. Freshwater Shrimp grow best in a basic three pond growout, where the behaviour of the Freshwater Shrimp can be monitored.

You should then buy and stock your pond with juvenile Freshwater Shrimp, instead of hatching your own seed stock. Be very careful of your seed stock sources and the proper handling procedures.

The location of the Freshwater Shrimp growout pond should be properly selected. The pond should be sloping with excellent pond drainage facilities. Pond design basics should be carefully looked into and basic pond water quality should be good. You should prepare your pond carefully for stocking.

Water quality standards for Freshwater Shrimp should be good, and the dynamics of water quality should be good.

Oxygen, water temperatures, pH and other characteristics affect Freshwater Shrimp, and pond water quality have to be managed and pond aeration techniques adhered to.

Pond water temperatures are important for aeration and quality standards.Prawn disease has to be detected and controlled. Feeding rates, feed conversion rates, effect of different protein levels, controlling feed costs have to be carefully maintained.

Growing rate in ponds, counting larger prawns, and pond substrates for better production are also important.

Freshwater Shrimp Larvae go through 11 zoel or larval stages before going through metamorphosis to post-larvae.

The hatchery stage is the most difficult stage of culture and is the only step that requires saline water. This is a very technical stage of culture and should not be attempted by individuals without extensive knowledge of water quality, filtration systems, and live food culture.
