Storing frozen fish

Frozen fish, once brought from the supermarkets, should be brought home immediately and stored in the home freezer at zero degree or lower. The fish should not be taken out of its original sealed packages. This frozen fish, should be used within the specified time period. Lean fish - 6 months, Medium Fat Fish - 4 months, Fat fish - 2 months.

How to thaw frozen fish

Fish should not be thawed before steaming, poaching or barbecuing in foil. If you need to cut the fish into strips or cubes, then partially thaw the fish in the refrigerator. But the fish should be completely thawed before frying, broiling, barbecuing or cooking in a microwave oven.

The best way to thaw the fish is to place the package in the refrigerator overnight or in cold water for a couple of hours. The fish should never be thawed at a room temperature. Thawed fish should be cooked soon after thawing. Fish that has been thawed should never be refreezed. The cooked fish is either served or wrapped well and refreezed for a short period of time.

Cooking frozen fish

Frozen fish is kept solidly frozen till needed. In a domestic freezer fish should not be stored for more than 2 months.

Frozen fish should be cooked in an icy state before it starts to drip. The cooking method has to be changed slightly. It has to be cooked for a longer period of time at a lower temperature.

Fish should not be overcooked, as it will lose its taste. It does not take long to cook fish. Microwaving is a process which can be used for cooking all kinds of fish. Poaching is also good for all kinds of fish. While poaching fish, it is cooked in a seasoned liquid jus below boiling point. Fish can also be steamed. Another excellent method is baking. All types of fish can be cooked by the baking method. The fish can be baked in the oven, either whole, filleted or as steaks. Whole fish when baked turns out to be excellent. The fish can be baked both dry and in liquid.
