The mussel industry
is a growing one. In three years time the present
output is expected to go up 25 times. The growers
of green mussels are to be found in Newfoundland.
65% of the total province's mussel production
takes place in Green Bay, where there are 7
growers. The rest of the province has 35 growers
who share 35% of the total mussel production
between them.
As the green
mussel industry is a growing industry, increased
sales are only to be expected in the near future.
Traditional marketing strategies have been discarded
and in its place marketing has become more formulated
and structured. Product appeal is being maximized
with the use of innovative marketing techniques.
This leads to better market accessibility. Also
tie ups with bigger companies lead to a wider
scope.
There are some
pockets where there is huge demand for green
mussels The western coast of North America,
Central Canada and North Eastern United States
are some of the examples. The European markets
are currently the largest consumers of mussels
and eat approximately 10 lbs per capita, annually.
The green mussels
are transported by trucks to markets which are
close by, whereas air transport is used for
distant markets. Green Bay, a major mussel producing
area has two convenient major airports nearby
which allows quick shipments to the markets.
Green mussels
are salt water animals. Hence, they prefer cool,
salt water. To ensure that they remain fresh,
mussels have to be kept in refrigerated containers.
They also must be kept away from human contact.
Price depends upon the size of the mussels,
the amount of meat yield, the quality of the
mussels and their condition when they arrive
at the market.
