Sea bass also
known as Lates Calcarifer, is found widely in
the Indo West Pacific region from the Arabian
Gulf to China, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea, and
Northern Australia.
As the sea bass
moves through the different stages in its life
cycle, it shifts from fresh to salt water and
vice versa. The adult fish prefers the estuaries,
coastal areas and lower reaches of rivers. The
brakish water swamps near the estuaries form
the habitat of larvae and young juveniles, while
the upper parts of the rivers house the older
juveniles.
As the sea bass
is euryhaline, it can live both in fresh and
salt water. But eggs and larvae can survive
only in brakish or salt water. Hence all breeding
takes place in river mouths and bays which are
suitable areas for the eggs and larvae to survive.
The juvenile sea bass ideally stays in mangrove
swamps and low lying land that is flooded during
monsoonal rains.
The sea bass
matures sexually between 2 and 3 years of age.
They first mature as males and after one or
more spawning, they undergo a sexual change
and become females capable of sexual reproduction.
Spawning, strangely appears to be related to
the lunar cycle. It takes place at night during
slack tide.
The sea bass
is famous as a freshwater fish. It grows to
a fairly big size (60kg) and is great tasting.
This fish has a pointed head, concave forehead,
large jaws extending behind the eye and rounded
caudal fin. Sea bass are strong fighters. The
adult fish is blue to greenish grey dorsally,
silvery on the sides, with a white under belly.
Juveniles have a mottled brown color and a distinct
white strip from the dorsal fin to the snout.
They eatt a wide variety of food; fishes, shrimps,
cray fish, crabs and aquatic insects.
The sea bass
or Lates calcarifer as its scientific name goes
can grow up to a length of 180cm. There is a
successful farming industry mainly in Thailand.
But the farmed ones are not grown over 3 kgs
and are sold at plate size (500gms) or as fillets.
The sea bass is the representative fish of Australia.
