The production
of white shrimp in Thailand has gone up to a
great extent. But what Thailand is doubtful
about is whether all this extra production can
be absorbed by the domestic market. Yields of
white shrimp are higher than those of Black
Tiger shrimp. In 2005, stocks are expected to
go up from 3,25,000 tons to 4,00,000 tons. The
main production areas are Nakhon Si Tnammarat,
Songkhla and Chanthaburi. The liberal government
policy now allows imports of white shrimp breeding
stocks.
Production of
white shrimp has become more popular now because
of higher yields, lower costs and lower loss
ratios. Because of the expected rise in shrimp
production, the shrimp export this year could
exceed next years target by 10 percent. This
could be based on the facts that Thailand might
have a lower anti-dumping duty rate imposed
by the U.S. Also the E.U. might restore the
GSP (Generalized System Of Preferences) for
shrimp imported from Thailand.
As the production
of shrimps have definitely gone up, the U.S.
market has become the prime buyer of Thailand's
shrimp products. The U.S market now absorbs
more than half of the Thai shrimp exports. This
could help maintain not only a hundred billion
bath a year business but also 1.5 million people
working in this industry. The local people are
very much involved in the shrimp exports business.
