India Shrimp Market Outlook : January 4, 2017
India Vannamei raw material prices for1st week of 2017 in Andhra Pradesh remains mostly unchanged from late December.
Availability remains poor in Andhra Pradesh while the season in Kolkata and Odisha has already ended. Availability in Andhra Pradesh comes mostly with 30, 40 and 50 pcs/kg HOSO counts. Smaller sizes remain very scarce.
Major pond stocking in Orissa and Kolkata will start by early Feb while most farmers in Andhra Pradesh will begin stocking end Feb. However, we are also hearing that up to 25-30% of farmers in Andhra Pradesh may also start seeding early Feb.
We are hearing from some sources that total volume of India Vannamei production in 2016 was 10-15% less than 2015. This was surprising given that most farmers in Kolkata and Odisha had switched to Vannamei instead of Black Tiger in addition to many new farms coming on line.
Major obstacles hindering growth were severe weather & flooding as well as poor pond management resulting in various diseases including white spot.
We expect Vannamei production to grow in India in 2017. Many Indian farmers seem to be taking extra precautions to achieve a more sustainable harvest. Following better pond reconditioning protocols prior to new seeding is one of them.
