Indonesia Shrimp Market Update : October 27, 2017
According to shrimp suppliers, raw material landings in Indonesia has started to improve. We are seeing larger sizes in the market – HLSO size 16/20 – 26/30 and prices on these sizes has softened compare to the last few months.
Smaller sizes – HLSO sizes 41/50 – 71/90 are available but in much shorter supply.
Shrimp processors and shrimp exporters still have many orders on the books for smaller sizes and still have to fulfil these commitments. Raw material prices for these smaller sizes remain very firm and supply is unable to meet demand. Farmers are generally targeting larger sizes and smaller sizes only available from smaller partial harvests or un-forecasted harvests.
Demand from USA buyers has slowed down over the past month. Some US importers saying prices have weakened in the US market due adequate inventory there.
Some Indonesian processors and shrimp exporters who have inventory have been selling at quite competitive prices in order to turn over stock and maintain cash flow.
Indonesian selling prices verses raw material prices have generally been out of sync this year but export volumes remain similar to last year.
This year has been a very difficult year from Indonesian processors as the market price has been mostly disconnected from raw material prices.
