Pakfood in R&D push on gluten free products : May 21, 2015

Thai shrimp and seafood processor Pakfood is in the midst of a research and development (R&D) drive on gluten-free products, said Pruit Kanokwatanawan, the general manager of the company’s Okeanos Food plant.
The company is looking to develop breaded products and tempura in Okeanos that are gluten free, but taste as if they are not, he told Undercurrent News.
This is a fresh R&D push for the company for this year, driven by demand in western countries for gluten free, he said. There is little awareness or demand in Asia, yet.
Around 30% of the sales from the Okeanos division of Thai Union Frozen Products-owned Pakfood, are now non-shrimp, value-added products, such as crab cakes or fried and breaded squid.
Siam Canadian Group, which sells Pakfood’s products to some customers, is looking to offer more of the company’s value-added products into the North American markets.
Siam Canadian is also looking to tap demand in Canada for halal-certified seafood from Pakfood, said Satasap Viriyanantawanit, general manger for Thailand with Siam Canadian.
