Thailand Shrimp Market Update : January 9, 2016
Thailand shrimp prices are generally high and supplies are currently short. This is largely due to normal low production cycle at this time of year however disease problems from late 2016 also remain a factor. Some key packers are still struggling to fill pending contracts.
Severe flooding in south of Thailand since December is now affecting 10 provinces. There is now widespread damage to roads, housing, infrastructure as well some #shrimp farming areas. 20 fatalities are reported to date.
It is unknown at this point the extent of the damage to shrimp farms but the impact will be felt into Q2 2017. The situation will become more clear towards end Q1.
Once flooding has subsided, repairs, re-preparation and seeding of ponds will take at least 60 days thus next crop production will be delayed. Southern Thailand accounts for 60% of the country’s total shrimp production.
