Thailand Shrimp Market Update : February 21, 2017
CGenerally, shrimp prices from Thailand remain high. Thailand vannamei exporters are having difficulty selling at current prices.
Most sales from vannamei suppliers are taking place on more value added items such as pre-fried shrimp tempura, shrimp rings, small CPND plus any inventory that vannamei suppliers are looking to liquidate.
However, shrimp processors still need to obtain enough raw material to run through their plants to cover overheads. Plus there is still some contracts remaining on the books that vannamei exporters still have ship out. Demand from these processors is keeping Thailand prices firm.
We do not expect any significant supply improvement before end April. The cool season is just over and shrimp farmers have started seeding the new crop. Partial harvests on smaller sizes should start on a small scale in early April.
We expect that supplies will start to improve on small sizes from late April onwards and larger sizes will begin harvesting in May and June. Vannamei suppliers expect peak production season to be in June/July.
