Vietnam Shrimp & Pangasius Market Update : October 30, 2017
According to shrimp suppliers, Black Tiger shrimp intensive farming season is over now. For black tiger extensive farming, shrimp exporters expect some larger sizes towards year end.
Main season for large sizes black tiger is from year end through to April/May. For 2017 black tiger will represent approximately 35% of total shrimp harvest.
Shrimp exporters and vannamei suppliers advise vannamei shrimp harvests continue but approaching end of the season. There are some ongoing disease issues but nothing particularly substantial.
Pangasius processors and pangasius exporters are currently busy completing orders for end season shipments to North American and Europe. Everything pretty much has to be shipped out within the next 2 weeks for those markets. Other Asian countries will tend to ship out within November. For China market, shipments must go out by end Jan to catch Chinese New Year sales. At this point we do not see any possibility for a price drop before Feb/March 2018.
Fish will start laying eggs in April, then one month for fingerlings, then another 6~8 months to grow out. Therefore we will unlikely see any significant improvement in supply before Q4, 2018. Demand will likely be the major factor on prices for the coming 6-8 months.
